Eestlaste hulgas on vähe neid, kes ei ole käinud laulupeol. Mõne võrra vähem on neid, kes on ise osalenud lauljana. Veel vähem on meie hulgas neid inimesi, kellel on olnud põhjust tõusta üles dirigendipulti, kõikide nende sadade tuhandete pealtvaatajate ja lauljate ette. Dirigendid teadustatakse välja, nad tulevad meie kõigi ette ja kõik justkui näevad neid, samas on tohutu hulk vaatajaid, kes jäävad ilma võibolla ühest kõige vaatamisväärsemast – dirigentide ja lauljatevahelisest emotsionaalsest suhtlemisest.
Ei ole vist ühtegi fotograafi, kes poleks otsinud vastust küsimusele – mis teeb pildi heaks, või mis paneb pildi elama. Jah, on erinevaid vaatenurki ja teinekord ka kõikvõimalikke tehnilisi võimalusi, kuid minu jaoks on äärmiselt tähtis ikkagi inimene oma emotsioonidega konkreetses olukorras. Laulupeo dirigent tuleb dirigendipulti ülimalt keskendununa, valmis jagama oma ettekujutust muusikast tuhandetega. Tänapäeva tehniline maailm aitab kinni püüda hetke, jäädvustada sündmust ja sellega seostuvaid meeleolusid. Kui mulle tavaliselt meeldib pilte töödelda ja photoshopi abil leida erinevaid tonaalsusi, siis nende piltide puhul olen seda teadlikult vältinud. Dirigentide näol on esindatud terve muusikaliste karakterite palett ning dirigendid annavad endast absoluutselt kõik, et seda meieni tuua.
Pildid on tehtud “Aja puudutus. Puudutuse aeg” esimese päeva kontserdil valikkooride esimese tenori vaatenurgast. Esindatud on kõik dirigendid, kes tol päeval juhatasid, täpselt selles järjekorras nagu kava ette nägi. See oli fotograafile suur väljakutse. Kontsert kestis natuke üle kolme tunni, mille jooksul pidin kohanema pea kõikvõimalike valgustingimustega. Alustades pildistamisega vastu kontrastset valgust varjualas, lõpetades prožektoritega võistlemise ja öövõtetega. Põhirõhk läks siiski keskendumisele, et mitte mööda lasta ühtegi väärtuslikku emotsiooni ja karakterit. Ning ausõna, laulsin ka veel nii kuis jaksasin 🙂
Touched by Time. The Time to Touch
There aren’t many Estonians who haven’t been to the Song Festival. A somewhat smaller number of those have actually taken part as singers. Among them an even smaller number of people have had a reason to go up the conductor’s podium to stand in front of all those hundreds of thousands of singers and members of the audience. When the conductors are announced, they appear in front of us visible to all, and yet, the majority of the audience will always miss out on perhaps the most spectacular phenomenon – the emotional communication between conductors and singers.
There isn’t a single photographer who hasn’t pondered over the question – what makes a photo stand out. True, there are different views on the matter and often a plethora of technical opportunities to support those views, but for me it is the person with their emotions in a given situation that plays the key role. The conductor conducting at the Song Festival is immensely focused, ready to share their vision of music with thousands of people. Modern technical resources help us capture a moment with the relevant mood. Although I usually like editing photos and trying out different colour schemes in Photoshop, I have not done so with these photos. The conductors represent a wide range of musical characters, who do their utmost to pass on the right emotions.
The photos were taken from the perspective of a first tenor of the selected choirs performing on the first day of the concert ’Touched by Time. The Time to Touch.’ All the conductors who conducted on that day are represented here, exactly in the order of appearance given in the programme. It was a huge challenge for the photographer. The concert lasted just over three hours during which I had to adapt to a range of lighting conditions from shooting in a contrasty shadow area to taking night shots with strong spotlights in the background. My main target was still to concentrate hard so as not to miss a single valuable emotion or character. And Scout’s honour, while doing all that, I sang my heart out 🙂
